The Montgomery County Planning Department’s 2013 Countywide Transit Corridors Functional Master Plan aimed to improve transit opportunities to support economic development and mobility goals sustainably. The Plan suggested updates to the transportation network, focusing on densely developed areas, and included the MD 355 Flash BRT service to enhance bus service along MD 355. During design of the BRT routes, GPI Geospatial Inc. used its mobile mapping system to collect ground-based lidar and street level imagery. GPI Geospatial covered 21.7 miles of existing urban roadway along a busy, commercialized highway in the county’s main business districts, positioning over 300 mobile and aerial targets using RTK GNSS positioning. Aerial imagery and lidar is used to supplement the street level data to provide a 3D survey in traditional CADD along with georeferenced orthophotography and bare earth lidar surface data. 🚆 Senate Appropriations Committee Advances FY25 Transportation Appropriations Bill 🚆 The Senate Committee on Appropriations has taken a significant step forward with advancing the FY25 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Bill, passing it with a strong bipartisan vote. This legislation is crucial for the future of public transit, passenger rail, and infrastructure development across the nation. Key highlights include 🤝 $21.3 billion for public transit, a 2.1% increase from FY24. 🤝 $16.7 billion for passenger and freight rail, a 2.7% increase from FY24. 🤝 $2.63 billion was allocated for Amtrak, significantly surpassing the House bill. 🤝 $3.9 billion for Capital Investment Grants (CIG) to support community infrastructure projects. Notably, the bill emphasizes accessibility and equity, with provisions such as a 100% federal share for Enhanced Mobility of Seniors & Individuals with Disabilities and Rural Area formula grants. It also expands public transit agencies' authority for land acquisition. 🚍 This bill is a major victory for public transportation, ensuring robust funding and policy support for sustainable, connected, and equitable transit systems nationwide. This summer, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released "Separated Bike Lanes on Higher Speed Roadways: A Toolkit and Guide." The title might seem straightforward, but what exactly does the guide cover? 📚 Here’s a taste of some of the insights you’ll find: 🤝 Enacting supportive policies: Local policies can support separated bicycle lanes on higher-speed roads by requiring separation where bicycle lanes are present. ➡️ Horizontal and vertical separation: This section describes the tradeoffs of different forms of separation types, including delineator posts, parked cars, concrete barriers, raised medians, and raised bike lanes. 🚗 Design guidance for intersections and driveways: Particularly on higher-speed roads, designers should maintain separation on the bike facility for as long as possible through the intersection. 🛠️ Maintenance considerations: This section goes over considerations for stormwater, asset management, street sweeping, and seasonal maintenance.
